A detached property in the Wiltshire town of Chippenham, the clients wanted to create more space for their family and modernise the existing enclosed spaces. The brief was for a larger, open plan kitchen/living/dining area, a snug which could be shut-off from the rest of the house, a utility, gym as well as four bedrooms, including a large master suite.
The alterations also utilised the conversion of an existing single garage which was already connected to the main property. Two pitched structures facilitated the proposed spaces, connected by a flat roof over the gining, allowing for natural light to flood into the main social spaces. Further glazing was added to the two-storey rear extension to maximise light towards the existing rear of the property and create a visual connection to the garden. Existing rooms were reconfigured and the staircase flipped 180 degrees to give the property a more logical flow, creating a larger entrance hall in the process.
Timber shingles were selected for the external cladding to mirror the abundance of trees growing round the boundary of the property and to soften the impact of the two-storey rear extension. Black frames and features were then also added in stark contrast, highlighting certain parts of the building. 3D and VR designs were included in this scheme and were able to demonstrate to the clients how natural lights would affect the existing building and define placement of roof oversails and pergolas for shading. 3D modelling also allowed the client to walk through the property using the VR headset and enabled them to make design decisions based on experiencing the building fully, enhancing the design further than simply just having the 2D plans.
